The theme of the day
On 20 December 2013, at its 68th session, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 3 March as the day of signature of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), United Nations World Wildlife Day, to celebrate and raise awareness of the world’s wild animals and plants. The 2025 theme of the international day, “Finance for wildlife conservation: Investing in people and planet,” explores how we can work together to make our current, insufficient financial flows more effective and sustainable to build a resilient future for both people and planet.
Species at risk
With over 1 million species estimated to be at risk of extinction and the triple global crisis intensifying, innovative wildlife conservation finance is more urgent than ever. Over half of the world’s GDP depends on nature, making biodiversity loss a significant threat to financial stability.
Wildlife conservation
World Wildlife Day 2025 will serve as a platform for the exchange and exploration of innovative financial solutions for wildlife conservation. It will showcase financial innovations, challenges faced by civil society, governments, organizations and the private sector, and collaborative approaches needed to secure sustainable financing for biodiversity (source: ISPRA).
