Close encounter
Inspections and technical investigations, carried out by the Trentino Forestry Corps, have made it possible to define with greater precision the contours of the close encounter between a hiker and a bear upstream from the town of Molveno. The meeting on Saturday afternoon took place along the forest road that runs through the Valle delle Seghe, from the Ciclamino hut to the Croz dell'Altissimo refuge.
A long chase
The hiker's story - confirmed by the finds collected on site - is that during the descent into the valley, a bear surprised him from behind and chased him for over a quarter of an hour until it got closer than two metres. During this period of time, the man tried to distance himself from the animal, walking backwards along the road so as not to lose sight of it and trying to scare it, until it disappeared into the woods.
The rules of conduct
In the next few days, genetic analyzes on the finds will allow us to establish the identity of the bear and verify whether it had been the protagonist of other episodes in the past. The invitation remains to stick to the good rules of behavior suggested by experts in the areas frequented by large carnivores and follow the advice on the website Grandicarnivori.provincia.tn.it (source: Province of Trento).
