La European Commission has recently published the technical note "on the criteria and guidelines for the designation of protected areas", on the objectives of the Biodiversity Strategy, aimed at allocating 10% of the European territory to strict protection, in order to counter the loss of species and habitat. The text expressed has been the subject of an important modification with respect to the previous Commission proposal and the part it considered hunting and fishing as activities not directly compatible with strictly protected areas, definitively eliminated.
The MEP reported this Massimo Casanova who, together with his colleague Dreosto, highlights the excellent result after a year of intense discussions between Member States within the NAEG committee "the European Commission was made to understand that a general ban on hunting and fishing in strictly protected areas, not only is it an unjustified measure to halt the loss of biodiversity, but above all, that the conservation activities implemented by hunters and fishermen are important, both in the management of protected areas, and to ensure support for local communities".
Casanova considers it essential that in the near future and in a perspective of renewed awareness, the individual countries act accordingly "in Italy too, the management of protected areas should allow hunting and fishing to be carried out in a controlled manner, in particular on wild ungulates, which continue to proliferate, creating environmental imbalances as in the case of the Gargano Park, where herds of undisturbed wild boars continue to devastate habitats and agricultural land, protected by regulations which, on the other hand, have a negative impact on biodiversity and on local communities ".
