The total allocation
The Regional Council of Sardinia, on the proposal of the Councillor for Environmental Protection Rosanna Laconi, has approved the new criteria for the distribution of funds destined to the Provinces and Metropolitan Cities for compensation for damage caused by wildlife to agricultural, fisheries, and livestock production. The total allocation, amounting to €1 million for 2025, is aimed at ensuring continued reimbursement to affected entrepreneurs and supporting monitoring and prevention activities in the region.
Distribution criteria
The resolution redefines the distribution of resources in light of the new institutional structure of the Provinces and Metropolitan Cities, established by Regional Laws No. 7 of 2021 and No. 9 of 2024, and introduces proportional distribution criteria based on the extent of damage recorded in recent years and the availability of residual funds. "The protection of agricultural, livestock, and fisheries production and the conservation of wildlife," emphasizes Councilor Laconi, "must proceed together, not in opposition. The Region is working to establish a balance based on knowledge and responsibility, which involves damage prevention and wildlife management based on reliable and up-to-date data. The new distribution of resources between Provinces and Metropolitan Cities, defined in line with the new territorial structure, also moves in this direction: ensuring uniformity of criteria and continuity of support. The cormorant census, which will soon be subject to methodological revision, is part of the same path of innovation and collaboration between institutions, research organizations, and businesses."
What will the resources be used for?
Fifteen percent of the funds (€150.000) will be allocated to the cormorant census, a preparatory activity for compensation for damage to Sardinian fisheries, while 85% (€850.000) will be divided between the Provinces and Metropolitan Cities to cover damage to agricultural and livestock production. The new distribution was approved with the favorable opinion of the Regional-Local Authorities Conference, which shared the approach proposed by the Department. The funds will fully cover the assessed damage and support the completion of the census and monitoring activities, pending approval of the new Regional Wildlife Plan, currently being updated. With this measure, the Region affirms its commitment to combining environmental protection and economic sustainability, providing the regions with effective tools for balanced management of wildlife presence and the protection of productive activities.
