The decision stems from the ordinance of the extraordinary commissioner for African swine fever (ASF), Giovanni Filippini, signed on August 4, which aims to strengthen measures to contain the health emergency and reduce the damage caused by the excessive presence of wild pigs, including serious agricultural losses and increasingly frequent road accidents.
The areas concerned
The advance will only apply to areas within the wild boar density reduction zone and will apply to the following hunting facilities: ATC BI 1, CA BI 1, AFV Baraccone, AFV Daniela, AFV Del Duca, AFV Cellarengo, AFV Nicoletta, AFV Ternavasso, AFV Valcasotto, AFV Vestignè, AATV Benese, AATV Ceresole d'Alba, AATV Roncaglia, and AATV Tenuta Pollenzo. Wild boar hunting in these areas will remain permitted until February 1, 2026.
As for all other species, however, no changes are expected: the regional hunting calendar confirms the general opening from September 21st.
Institutional declarations
Paolo Bongioanni, regional councilor for Agriculture, Hunting, Fishing, and Parks, emphasized the importance of collaborating with Commissioner Filippini: "We are in constant dialogue, and the proposal for a 20-kilometer no-go zone around the areas with the highest viral spread has been shared and accepted. Thanks to his ordinance, the Regions can advance the start of the season exclusively for wild boar."
The councilor also noted that this measure complements the existing selective culling plan, which calls for the culling of over 14.000 animals by March 15, 2026, by the Provinces and the Metropolitan City. "This is a combined effort," Bongioanni added, "which takes on even greater significance in these weeks, when the species is particularly active and problematic. The decision was shared with all stakeholders, authorizing the early cull only in those areas that requested it and that fall within the 20-kilometer protection zone defined by the commissioner."
