The situation last year
Le Piedmontese farms who suffered economic damage from wild fauna in 2024 will receive a total compensation of 3,6 million euros from the Region. The allocation will cover 83% of the assessed damages, quantified at 4.640.000 euros. "It is a percentage that places Piedmont in first place among the Italian Regions for the amount of compensation actually recognized to our farmers - highlight the President of the Region Alberto Cirio and the Councilor for Agriculture Paolo Bongioanni - A tool for direct support to our agricultural businesses that acts in synergy with the structural policies and tools made available for prevention, such as the various calls for tenders for the purchase and installation of physical barriers and means of contrast, and with the enormous work of managing wild fauna carried out together with the Provinces, the Metropolitan City of Turin, the Territorial Hunting Areas and the Alpine Districts".
Crops and livestock farming
While compensation for damage caused to agricultural production and structures by exceptional weather and climate events is managed at a national level and covered directly with its own funds, the Region takes on the important item of compensation for damage caused by wild fauna to crops and livestock farms (the latter being the subject of another regional measure). In 2024, there were 4.379 requests for compensation for damage to crops for a total amount of 4.640.000 euros. About 70% of the damage was caused by wild boars, 12% by ruminant ungulates, 9% by crows and the remainder by other animal species. The most frequent types of damage are the destruction of clods (over 14 thousand hectares) and of the finished product (4,5 thousand hectares), for a total loss quantified at 177 thousand quintals. The most affected province was Turin with 54 thousand quintals of lost product, followed by Novara, Alessandria, Biella, Cuneo, Asti, Vco, Vercelli: a "ranking" that reflects the combined operations carried out on the territory with prevention and contrast actions. Compensation is paid to the ATC, Ca, Provinces and Metropolitan City, the bodies that manage the investigations and then transfer the compensations to the damaged parties.
The highest compensations
With coverage of 83% of the damage, Piedmont is therefore the Italian region that ensures the highest compensation. Others recognize lower percentages (up to 70% in the Autonomous Province of Trento, up to 80% in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano and Friuli Venezia Giulia), some tie the percentage to the extent of the damage (Veneto recognizes just 60% for the portion exceeding 2.500 euros), others still establish a maximum damage limit (Friuli 5.000 euros, Liguria 8.000) or one-off formulas. Lombardy has allocated 2024 euros to this measure for 1.800.000, which is half of what Piedmont has allocated. And finally in Tuscany, Emilia Romagna, Calabria, Campania and Puglia the damages recorded in the areas included in ATC and CA are paid entirely with funds paid by these entities (Source PIEDMONT REGION).
