Environmentalists formally ask the President of the Piedmont Region to do everything possible to change the hunting law and thus avoid the Referendum.
Aware of the great difficulties for the Piedmont Region of organizing the Referendum on hunting to be held on June 3 with a large outlay of public money, the environmental associations promoting the consultation ask the President of the Region, Roberto Cota, to undertake in order to change the law and therefore avoid the Referendum.
The various environmental associations including Italia Nostra, Lac, Lav, Legambiente, Lipu, Pronatura and WWF, affirm, "After even the hunters and gunsmiths formally asked President Cota and all the parties present in the Regional Council, starting from majority, a jolt of responsibility in quickly finding a legislative solution rather than spending over 20 million euros for the referendum, there is no longer any justification for facing this huge expense which would otherwise be attributed to President Cota and his council, unable to write a few lines of law ”.
The long-awaited and contested referendum on hunting in Piedmont was finally imposed on the Region by a ruling by the TAR, but the animal welfare and environmental associations promoting the referendum affirm "Faced with the legitimate expectation of those who have collected the signatures and waited 25 years to see recognized the right to vote, but also to the very difficult economic moment in which the whole country, including the Piedmont region, is experiencing, it would be obvious, almost elementary, that responsible institutions would find the legislative solution that collects the referendum requests, avoiding a huge economic commitment".
The environmentalists continue, “Very few common sense things would be enough, such as safeguarding endangered species and the prediction of Sunday without dangers for all, to respond to the referendum requests. To date, however, none of the top representatives of the region seem to have the good sense to act. Is it ignorance or bad faith? ”.
In conclusion, the environmentalists state, “We are sure that in the absence of a legislative solution, e if Cota and his council were to make Piedmontese spend over 20 million euros, citizens would go to vote en masse out of a profound sense of responsibility, to have their say on the protection of nature and public safety, but also to provide the Region with a law that if they really can't write now, they can at least copy from the referendum questions ”.
