A special provision
In recent days, we have learned of a proposal to amend Annex XVII to European Regulation 1907/2006, regarding restrictions on the use of lead in hunting ammunition. The EC proposes to extend the ban the use of lead, currently planned for wetlands, to the entire European territory. If the measure sees the light in its current form, the ban will come into force after three years for shot ammunition and after a year and a half for whole ammunition. The times for sport shooting are longer. These are the timescales found appropriate by the Commission to allow manufacturers to adjust production and "churn out" effective non-toxic products in the quantities necessary to cover the need.
Fundamental points
Unfortunately, this turn of events was in the air, and we do not know how it will actually develop. We certainly want to emphasize some important points:
– If this change is approved, there must be truly available alternatives with effectiveness and price similar to that of lead ammunition.
– The ammunition stocks currently owned by hunters must be able to run out naturally.
Ammunition disposal
Our proposal seems to us to be based on common sense. Only in this way can the transition to less impactful ammunition be carried out in an orderly manner, without penalizing hunters and without generating the problem of disposing of large quantities of ammunition, now unusable, which must end up somewhere (source: Arci Caccia).
