A number to rebalance
“With respect to the Extraordinary Plan for the management and Wild boar containment in Puglia we are proceeding quickly: the administrative structure has been prepared, a widespread coordination between the various Territorial Hunting Areas and all the other entities responsible for bioregulation is urgently needed. We need to rebalance the number of wild boars to allow farms to live and work more peacefully, guaranteeing road safety to all citizens”. This was declared by the regional councilor for Agriculture Donato Pentassuglia during the event “Wild fauna in Puglia, innovations in management and containment”. The focus, organized yesterday by Cia-Agricoltori Italiani di Puglia in the “Le Grotte di Sileno” farmhouse in Castellaneta, started with a very significant video that focused on the damage caused by wild boars on crops and saw the participation of the “general states” of the fight against the emergency linked to wild fauna in the regional territory: university professors, regional directors and managers and representatives of the political world intervened by providing explanations, answering the questions of farmers, hunters and workers and informing the community about the management and containment innovations of wild boars.
Hygiene and public health
Pentassuglia reassured everyone: "We are proceeding with the culling and out of 4.000 heads, about 2.800 remain. Also drawing inspiration from the testimonies heard today, I will try to draft a law amendment, which obviously includes every aspect of hygiene and public health, so that the short supply chain can be promoted in Puglia. There are resources available for our agricultural companies. On this issue, however, as has happened in the past, I will always continue to discuss with universities and the scientific community". Moreover, alongside the regional councilor for Agriculture, there were none other than Professor Antonio Camarda, of the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Bari, and the regional directors Domenico Campanile and Onofrio Mongelli. During his presentation, Dr. Camarda revealed the strategies implemented to implement the depopulation of wild fauna, focusing on the importance of reducing contact between wild boars and other animal species, to avoid any possible infections from African swine fever.
Very precise targets
Instead, it was up to Dr. Campanile to disclose the details of the Extraordinary Containment Plan developed by the Region: “Everyone must have very specific roles directly proportional to their skills: the ATCs in the huntable areas, the management bodies in the protected areas and the mayors in the urban areas. The wild boar population is increasing throughout the national territory - concluded Campanile -, but we have specific targets to respect annually and it is in this direction that we are working every day”. Finally, Mongelli, director of the Health and Well-being Promotion Section of the Puglia Region: “The objective of 4.000 animals to be slaughtered was indicated to us at a central level. We expect to achieve it by the end of 2025” he declared. Not only the wild boar emergency among the alarm cries launched by Cia to the top of the Puglia Region: "This plan is an excellent starting point and for this reason we acknowledge the good work done by the regional department - declared the deputy vice president of Cia Puglia Giannicola D'Amico - at the same time however we have also forcefully raised the problem related to wolves, starlings and the monk parakeet that is raging in the province of Bari and beyond. We believe it is important to continue working together without ever lowering our guard".
The next steps
The event, among many others, also saw the participation of the presidents of the ATC of Foggia, Brindisi and Taranto, of ASL veterinarians, hunters, mayors and delegates of Castellaneta, Laterza, Martina Franca and Palagiano and of the general director of the ASL of Taranto Vito Gregorio Colacicco. "We must continue quickly in this direction and proceed with the cullings perhaps allowing hunters to hunt all year round", finally proposed the Cia through Pietro De Padova and Vito Rubino, respectively president and director of the Area Due Mari Taranto-Brindisi. "We must overcome the emergency - added the two leaders of one of the most affected provinces - using exceptional measures, proportional to the severity of the events that daily affect the agricultural world and citizens. The armchair environmentalists, those who only speak out of prejudice and without knowledge of the facts, should finally come to terms with it" (source: CIA Puglia).
