Green light to the draft Regulation which establishes new provisions for the functioning of the Environmental Monitoring Unit of the Puglia regionThis is the regional organizational structure responsible for monitoring and preventing crimes in the environmental, mining, water protection and waste management sectors, environmental assessments (EIA), and fishing and hunting.
Regulatory certainty
According to the Regional Councilor for the Environment, the new Regulations for the Environmental Surveillance Unit are the result of joint efforts by the Department of the Environment, the Environmental Surveillance Section, the Legal Office, and the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Puglia Region. They ensure regulatory certainty and full operational capability for a vital agency for territorial protection, given the important judicial police and public safety functions performed by the unit's members from provincial offices. The new regulations responded to the need to align the provisions with the Ministry and Prefecture's guidelines, definitively overcoming the critical issues identified and clarifying the Unit's functions, responsibilities, and operational scope, in line with regional and national regulations. This provides a clearer organization, better structured roles, and territorial coordination capable of ensuring more effective and comprehensive action throughout Puglia.
Permanent garrison
The councilor also emphasized that the Environmental Supervisory Unit will continue to play its important role, having represented a stable and recognized regional oversight body for years, pending a general review of the regulations governing both units within the Regional Supervisory Section (Environmental Supervisory Unit and Supervisory, Control, Protection, and Representation Unit), which will be guided by a comprehensive and appropriately diversified reorganization. The Environmental Supervisory Unit is a point of reference in the prevention and repression of environmental crimes, the protection of natural resources, and the oversight of mining, fishing, and hunting activities.
