Hunting: Puglia, wild boar census operations started in the Alta Murgia National Park.
The wild boar census activity continues for the fourth consecutive year throughout the territory of the Alta Murgia National Park. The campaign lasts four days and involves the Park technicians together with the State Forestry Corps, the Regional Wildlife Observatory and the University of Bari, which involved about 40 students in field operations. The intervention, included in the plan for the control of the population of boars (proposed by the Park Authority and approved by the Ministry of the Environment and the Protection of the Territory and the Sea) provides, in its first phase, population monitoring activities. Once the population estimate has been completed with the data collected over four years, we will move on to the ungulate selection phase..
“The Park Authority - comments the president Cesare Veronico - was the first subject to be damaged by the introduction of wild boars into the territory; an operation that was carried out before the establishment of the protected area which paid the consequences. The number of companies asking the Park for compensation for i is increasing year by year damage to crops and structures. This made it a careful management plan for these wild animals is necessary, which cannot ignore the knowledge of certain data on the consistency of the populations".
“The organization of these days and the management plan - concludes the director Fabio Modesti - requires a considerable organizational effort, but the desire for collaboration that all the interested parties are demonstrating are an indication of new and important synergies. Moreover, it is common to intend to implement coherent strategies for the management of wildlife always considering the protected natural context in which we work ".
