The latest local data
Thirty-seven wild boars were captured in Puglia in the last 30 days in the four areas of the region where special cages have been installed: the Pig Brig. Three are located in the province of Taranto (Riva dei Tessali, Ginosa and Castellaneta), the other in the Mercadante forest, in the area of the Alta Murgia. To date, there are no cases of swine fever in Puglia. The data are provided by Domenico Campanile, manager of the sustainable management and protection of forestry and natural resources section of the Region's agriculture department. The definitive plan to contain the wild boar population in the area will soon be made public. The objectives, explains Campanile, are "to drastically reduce damage to agricultural businesses and road accidents caused by wildlife, especially wild boars".
Containment plan
“We – highlights the manager – have jointly approved with our healthcare colleagues (because we are talking about a health emergency), a plan to contain the species in order to avoid the spread of the disease: wild boars, in fact, are the vectors of the virus in pig farms. We are intervening on these specific companies with a specific notice that will be issued by our territorial hunting areas, ATC, present in every province of Puglia, in order to allow these companies to strengthen their prevention systems and avoid contact between pigs and wild boars”.
Protected areas
Campanile adds that "we are working, together with sele-control (selective killing of wild boar), also on captures, following a request from the mayors who reported the wild boar problem. Especially in regional protected areas, priority will be given to capture rather than direct shooting." There is another aspect regarding the plan and ongoing activities. “We are also working – concludes Campanile – to rebalance the wild boar population which today is in a state of imbalance not only in Puglia, but also in Italy and Europe. It is an intervention that is being carried out for the biological regulation of the species. The number of animals present in hectares is higher than the number indicated by Ispra".
