Priorities written down in black and white
From simplifying building procedures for the construction of permanent shelters, currently hampered by the usual excessive bureaucracy, to assisted catering in school and kindergarten canteens by agritourism businesses, from the proposal to support with incentives virtuous businesses that use surface water or consortium irrigation, avoiding drawing water directly from the aquifer, to strengthening the Department of Agri-Food, which will need to have more powers to manage increasingly frequent crises in the sector. Among the priorities expressed by the Elban farmers The need to find resources to finance the wild boar eradication plan, which despite efforts and commitment has stalled. These are some of the priorities identified in recent months of consultations and meetings in the area ahead of the regional elections on October 12th and 13th by Coldiretti Livorno, presented to councilor candidates at a meeting in Livorno.
The critical issues of the agricultural sector
These proposals are contained in the manifesto "The Pride of Cultivating the Future": a grassroots document that outlines, one by one, the critical issues facing individual agricultural sectors—from livestock farming to nursery gardening, from fishing to grain growing, from olive growing to reception and forest management—and, in typical Coldiretti style, proposes possible solutions. The meeting, coordinated by provincial president Ferri Graziani and provincial director Giovanni Duò, was attended by candidates supporting the outgoing governor, Eugenio Giani, Alessandro Franchi, and Silvia Gsess, and those supporting Alessandro Tomasi, Roberto Biasci, Marcella Amadio, and the Hon. Chiara Tenerini.
Market crisis
"We demand that agriculture be recognized as a strategic asset of the regional economy by confirming and strengthening the Department of Agri-food through the assignment of responsibilities for managing the market crisis, which unfortunately, due to distortions along the supply chain, are increasingly frequent. Look at milk and wheat. Agriculture is not just production: it is food, health, culture, and land protection," said Provincial President Ferri Graziani, recalling the law on multifunctionality, promoted and supported by Coldiretti, which has allowed agricultural businesses to diversify their activities and open up to new sectors such as tourism and social services. Landscape protection, land consumption, and the energy speculation that many areas risk being affected are at the forefront. Inevitably, reference is made to the law on areas suitable for renewable energy plants, which was "blocked" by the Regional Administrative Court ruling. "We collaborated on an important text for the reduction of suitable areas," continued President Ferri Graziani, "but now we have read with some concern the revival of an approach that has been adopted by the regional government." to the landscape that we fought so hard against 10 years ago."
Other suggestions
Regarding the reservoir plan and water management, the request is to "continue collaboration with land reclamation consortia and river basin authorities" because "land conservation and the development of irrigation networks are fundamental to imagining the agriculture of the future." On this front, Coldiretti has highlighted the need to simplify regulations for the reclamation of existing reservoirs—over 16 have been registered—to allow for rainwater collection and reuse, thus improving farm competitiveness. Among the proposals regarding labor is the establishment of a register of landless farms to combat illegality and exploitation, a topic Coldiretti has always been at the forefront of. In inland areas, where production costs are higher due to less mechanization, one approach could be to introduce specific bureaucratic simplifications and incentives to rebalance farms' economic balance (source: Coldiretti Livorno).
