Safeguarding the fishing sector
A few days ago the Prefect of Oristano Salvatore Angieri chaired a meeting dedicated to the main critical issues affecting the Oristano fishing communities, with the aim of identifying shared solutions that balance environmental protection with the safeguarding of the fishing sector, which is of fundamental importance to the local economy.
The first part of the meeting
The meeting was attended by representatives of fishing cooperatives and trade associations, as well as representatives of the regional Departments of Environmental Protection and Agriculture and Agro-Pastoral Reform, ISPRA technicians, the President of the Province, the Mayors of the Municipalities of Cabras, Terralba, and San Vero Milis, as well as local police officers, the Commander of the Port Authority, and a representative of the Forestry and Environmental Protection Corps. The first part of the meeting focused on the issue of damage caused by cormorants, a phenomenon that significantly impacts the availability of fish resources within fishponds.
The new deadline
At the end of the discussions, addressing the fishermen's concerns while ensuring respect for environmental balances, the consensus was reached to extend the cormorant containment operations envisaged in the current plan until March 31st, limited to the perimeters of the fishponds. The Provincial Administration will therefore proceed with making the necessary changes to the plan, identifying the fishpond areas where the exemption will be permitted. The plan will then be validated by ISPRA within a short timeframe.
