Capture and translocation
The technical meeting aimed at defining the operational actions and the related timeframes for the continuation of the capture and translocation activities of the mouflons present in the seaside village of ArbataxAttending the meeting, in addition to representatives of the Nature Protection and Forestry Policies Service of the Department of Environmental Protection of the Sardinia Region, were representatives of the Municipality of Tortolì, the FoReSTAS Agency (Territorial Services of Lanusei and Sassari), the General Directorate of the Forestry Corps and Environmental Surveillance (Territorial Service Departmental Inspectorate of Lanusei), the ASL Ogliastra (Veterinary Service), and the Zooprophylactic Institute of Tortolì.
Pack Monitoring
During the meeting, a joint inspection was conducted to identify a suitable and adequately fenced area for the temporary containment of the animals. The composition of the technical task force was also determined. Under the coordination of the Department of Environmental Protection, it will oversee the continuation of the capture and translocation activities. The operational procedures for the various phases of the intervention were shared, including monitoring the herd, identifying capture sites, attractive feeding activities, capture using cage traps, assessing the animals' health status, collecting and processing biological samples for genetic typing, identifying the specimens, and subsequently translocating them to the designated sites. The Mayor of Tortolì, Marcello Ladu, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting, highlighting the importance of institutional collaboration in managing a situation that affects the urban context and the safety of the local population.
A shared operating framework
Andrea Dessy, Director of the Nature Protection and Forestry Policies Service, emphasized how the meeting allowed for the definition of a shared operational framework, with clearly identified roles and timelines, to ensure coordinated intervention in compliance with current regulations and wildlife protection criteria. The initiative builds on the process initiated in previous technical meetings and represents a further step toward structured and responsible management of the mouflon presence in the Arbatax area, with the aim of protecting the safety of citizens, animal welfare, and the environmental balance of the territory.
