Three decades of activity
We report below the note of Alessandro Tedeschi, president of the Amici di Scolopax association regarding the Overland 2026 project: “The project has reached its 15th year of activity. This Italian study, aimed at improving understanding of woodcock phenology for improved woodcock management, draws a partial and provisional assessment following the completion of seasonal fieldwork. This season, 32 woodcocks were captured, 28 of which were subsequently equipped with satellite transmitters. Capture and monitoring activities were conducted in 10 regions of the Italian peninsula, covering approximately 11.500 km.".
Migratory movements
"Between December 10th and February 15th, we have recorded migratory movements of 20 woodcocks. To date, three losses have been recorded, two due to natural predation and one due to hunting in foreign territories in the last ten days of February. Considering that several woodcocks are still in their wintering grounds and that the frequency of transmissions is staggered based on battery power availability, we believe that better clarifications will emerge in the near future. We are justifiably proud to have been able to initiate and implement a scientific understanding and management plan for a species as beloved as it is persecuted.".
