Who is funding the project?
A new model for coexistence between farmers and wolves is being developed in Calabria . Fourteen Abruzzese-Maremma Sheepdog puppies have been delivered to farms, and a protocol has been signed with the Provincial Health Authority to strengthen the system of assistance and health monitoring for dogs used in prevention activities. The project, funded by the Calabria Region and coordinated by Legambiente with the support of ENCI, CPAM (Circolo Pastore Abruzzese Maremmano), and GreenWood, supports farmers through scientific monitoring activities and professional training to develop skills dedicated to managing livestock herding dogs.
Coexistence possible?
“Le Sentinelle di Wolfnet” addresses farmers, administrators, hunters, schools, citizens, and mountain enthusiasts with a simple message: coexistence is possible, but it must be built with effective tools, adequate knowledge, and collaboration between all stakeholders.
Prevent predation
And to make this message concrete, the highlight of the day was the delivery of 14 carefully selected Maremma Sheepdog puppies, which will become livestock guard dogs, to the Calabrian livestock farms involved in the project. Livestock guard dogs are, in fact, one of the concrete tools identified to prevent predation and promote sustainable management of the coexistence between wolves and agricultural activities.
