Healthy and safe food
"One wonders what Stefano Feltri eats for lunch and what menu he has these days, to be angry with those who work every day to ensure healthy and safe food for everyone, including himself. His attack on the sector today is incomprehensible." This was the response of the national president of Cia-Agricoltori Italiani, Cristiano Fini , to the journalist who, speaking on In Onda, the program on La 7 hosted by Marianna Aprile and Luca Telese, commented, among other things: "Agriculture is useless."
More than just 4 cats
"Just to clarify," Fini adds, "agriculture is not a small-time, profit-driven, and polluting sector. These are gratuitous and serious accusations, an insult to a sector that, among other things, and plain for all to see, is facing extreme crises, not just climate-related ones. We're talking about those who guarantee food security: over 1 million active farms in Italy and an entire national agri-food supply chain that generates a value of over 600 billion euros, 15% of the national GDP, and exports exceeding 70 billion."
The CAP
Regarding the CAP, Fini clarifies: "EU funds aren't just handouts, but serve to ensure traceable and accessible food for 450 million European citizens. They barely cover the costs of the world's most stringent environmental standards and compensate for land protection against hydrogeological instability and depopulation."
Pollution issue
"It's also unacceptable to hear that agriculture is the most polluting sector, when the sector accounts for approximately 7,7% of total Italian emissions (ISPRA data) and our country is first in Europe for low emissions per unit of product and a leader in the incidence of organic farming. Lower taxes on farmers," he continues, "would rather help mitigate climate risks and the explosion of production costs, to prevent the weakest links—farmers and citizens—from bearing the brunt. Yes," Fini concludes, "agriculture is the most strategic sector because without it, there is no food and we lose entire territories, inland areas that are given very little concern, let alone lobbies.
