The areas of intervention
They officially started in the Trentino part of the Stelvio Park Deer culling. The goal is to reduce the population of these ungulates, especially since the species' conservation plan came into effect in 2023. Nearly 3 deer had been counted in the Val di Sole district, with hunters taking action in two areas: Val di Peio and Val di Rabbi.
The reasons for the withdrawals
The initial target was 400 kills, but this figure was later reduced to 237 at the specific request of the hunters themselves. The decision was made to address the damage caused by deer, as they impact the survival of chamois and roe deer, as well as the flora in the area. Last but not least, hay production has declined, with almost a third less in the spring months.
The staff who intervene
In carrying out the sampling activities outlined in the monitoring plan, the National Park administration employs forestry surveillance staff and involves specially trained resident hunters. The state framework law provides for this possibility, provided that the personnel involved hold a firearms license and have attended training courses explaining the objectives of the monitoring plan.
