Reduction in deer numbers
The deer conservation and management plan for the period 2022-2026 has officially begun, which concerns the Stelvio National Park. The objective of the natural area which includes four distinct provinces (Bolzano, Brescia, Sondrio and Trento) and two regions (Trentino Alto Adige and Lombardy) is to reduce the overall number of these ungulates once and for all.
The control zones
For the first time a project of this kind is being developed on the Trentino side of this park, a detail of no small importance. In detail, the Trentino Stelvio is divided into two control zones, one of which is located in Val di Peio and the other in Val di Rabbi, with the possibility of killing animals. However, the plan has had a troubled path to say the least.
The numbers of the park
The green light for the culling of deer in the Stelvio Park dates back to no less than November 2022, therefore exactly one year ago. Just twelve months ago there were just under 3 thousand deer in Val di Sole, 1600 of which were in the protected area. According to the Province of Trento, the high density of the species causes a series of problems both for other ungulates, such as chamois and roe deer, and for the flora of the area.
