Data from 2024
The meeting between the extraordinary commissioner for the African swine feverGiovanni Filippini, and the relevant departments of the Italian regions. The meeting was also attended by Agriculture Councilor Francesco Agus. The videoconference focused on the National Action Plan for the capture, slaughter, and management of wild boar carcasses in African Swine Fever (ASF)-free areas. Although Sardinia is not currently among the territories affected by ASF, following the resolution of the health emergency in 2024, the Region is not currently included in the National Action Plans. This exclusion is due to the national regulatory framework in force in 2022, when the island was still subject to restrictions. During the meeting, however, the Councilor reiterated the need for Sardinia to be fully included in the National Plan to Combat African Swine Fever, highlighting how the management and containment of the wild boar population is a matter of primary importance for the region.
Don't let your guard down
"I have asked the Special Commissioner for clarification regarding Sardinia's status in relation to the national swine fever containment and prevention plans, requesting an update to the legislation. Relaxing our guard would be a grave mistake, especially considering the damage caused by the embargo and the sacrifices made to overcome it," the councilor stated. "Exiting the emergency, a significant achievement for our island, required enormous efforts. We therefore ask, as we have done with other regions, to be provided with all the necessary prevention tools to consolidate the results achieved and ensure the health situation remains stable over time. Furthermore, remaining outside the Plan would potentially exclude us from future resources," Agus concluded.
Constant monitoring
We can be satisfied that the response from Special Commissioner Filippini was positive and he expressed his support for revising the Sardinia Region's status in the Containment and Prevention Plan. We also appreciate the commitment of the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research to ongoing monitoring. This position confirms the Sardinia Region's commitment to maintaining a high level of focus on prevention and wildlife management, within the framework of shared institutional responsibility and loyal collaboration with the State and other Regions (source: Sardinia Region).
