The Province of Siena and its municipalities are maintaining maximum attention to African Swine Fever (ASF) prevention . As part of peacetime planning, an operational meeting was held in the Council Chamber of the Government Palace, requested by President Agnese Carletti. The meeting was attended by Giorgio Briganti, the Regional Commissioner for ASF, technicians from the Tuscany Region, the Mayors of the Siena area, the Tuscany National Association of Municipalities (ANCI), the Provincial Police, the Territorial Operations Group, and representatives of the Territorial Hunting Areas (ATC). Although the Province of Siena remains a "White Zone" (free from active outbreaks), local institutions are maintaining high levels of vigilance with the aim of adopting a strategic approach to protect the agricultural and livestock sector and avoid health emergencies.
A concrete threat
"African Swine Fever represents a concrete threat to our entire agricultural and livestock sector and the economy," said Agnese Carletti, President of the Province of Siena. "We are still in the 'White Zone,' and it is now that we must act with the utmost determination, knowing that we may not be immune to the virus. As a Province, we wanted this summit to unite: our goal is to ensure smooth and comprehensive coordination between municipalities, local health authorities, hunters, and regional institutions. Prevention today means protecting our excellent products as much as possible, supporting farmers, and developing cutting-edge land management practices that can transform critical issues into opportunities, as demonstrated by the commitment we will all have to make to the game supply chain. Teamwork and the role of GOT
For over two years, the Province has been working collaboratively through the GOT (Territorial Operations Group), a permanent working group. ASF is an extremely resilient virus and complex to eradicate. The data confirms the seriousness of the threat on a national and European scale. In Italy, 2.924 positive cases have been confirmed since 2024. In Tuscany, 802 positive wild boars have been recorded since 2024 (up from 584 on July 31, 2026, to the current 624, with an average of approximately 3 new cases per day in the affected areas of the region) (source: Province of Siena).
