The commissioner's resolution
Il Alta Murgia National Park The Regional Government has adopted new regulations for wild boar population control, as a strategic measure within the "Regional Plan of Urgent Interventions for the Management, Control, and Eradication of African Swine Fever in Farmed and Wild Suids." The decision was formalized with Commissioner's Resolution No. 19/2025, issued on November 11.11.25, 05 by the Extraordinary Commissioner, Dr. Nicola Fedele Loizzo, and takes into account the amendments to Annex A of the Regional Plan, introduced by Regional Government Resolution No. 00122 of May 17, 2024.
Control strategies
The regulations govern wild boar control within the Park, in compliance with the strategy outlined in the Puglia Region's Regional Plan for Urgent Interventions (PRIU). The priority activity, given its favorable cost/benefit ratio, consists of wild boar capture. Capture is carried out using cages/manholes (classic or smart), appropriately fed and equipped with trigger systems with swing doors. Captured animals must be transported live to an authorized storage center.
Supplementary/secondary measure
Selective culling from a fixed location is identified as a secondary and supplementary measure. The Park Authority has committed to training the technical personnel responsible for culling from a fixed location. This training will be provided through a specific training program approved by ISPRA, in accordance with the provisions of Article 11, paragraph 4, of Law No. 394/1991 (Framework Law on Protected Areas) (source: AB – Agrivenatoria Biodiversitalia).
