Damage prevention measures
The European Committee of the Regions believes that the protection status of some species, such as large carnivores, should be reviewed at regular intervals and that the European Union should fully finance measures to prevent or compensate for the damage caused. On 17 April 2024, the European Union Committee supported a periodic review of the protection status of large carnivores, underlining that the return of wolves, bears and other large carnivores is a conservation success.
Use of exemptions
According to the European Union's consultative body “it is absolutely necessary to address concerns for human life and safety in general, in particular as regards rural areas, their inhabitants and their agriculture”. The Committee underlines the importance, where coexistence with large carnivores poses difficulties, of intensifying prevention measures, educational activities and the use of derogations "which must not be compromised by the legislative acts of the Member States".
Compensation mechanisms
The European Committee of the Regions also asks the European Commission to evaluate the financing of measures that guarantee coexistence with large carnivores. Compensation mechanisms should be quick and accessible to all farmers without excessive bureaucracy. (Source CONFAGRICOLTURA)
