Problem species
"The hunting bill cannot fail to be an opportunity to achieve the objectives that Europe is asking of us, particularly with regard to invasive alien species, which cost the EU budget more than 12 billion euros a year, but not only that: problematic species such as feral pigeons, which are clearly of domestic origin, must be managed on a par with invasive species," he declares. Anna Maria Cisint, MEP for the League, close to the hunting world and the agricultural sector.
A specific request
Farmers are tired of having their crops damaged and the harvest of sensitive cultivars like sunflowers jeopardized by pigeons, which have nothing to do with wild bird species. I have therefore sent a specific request to our Departmental Wildlife Management Representative, the Honorable Francesco Bruzzone, so that he can act as a liaison for effective and decisive action on this issue, thus excluding from protection all invasive alien homeothermic species of EU and national concern, as well as those of domestic origin, which also compete negatively with wild fauna.
Protection of biodiversity
With the clear exception of game released for restocking and/or hunting purposes, this would also provide a very useful solution for the Regions, which do not always apply derogation culling and are forced to reimburse agriculture for millions of euros in wildlife damage every year.” Cisint finally recalled how the EU Regulation on nature restoration, in force since last August, imposes further mandatory and binding provisions on Member States specifically to combat invasive alien species and protect biodiversity.
