Over seven and a half centuries of history
This coming weekend, the 753rd edition of the Sagra dei Osei (Beast Festival) will take place in Sacile (PN). This event celebrates the hunting and ornithophilic traditions of a people, a rural culture that embodies hunting in all its facets. The event has its roots in the ancient San Lorenzo market, a popular gathering place: residents of the countryside and surrounding villages would gather in the space in front of the city walls, where a spontaneous market would take place, focusing on the buying and selling of song and decoy birds and the breeding of these species. The event organizers are announcing an international competition for the design of a promotional and celebratory poster, with leading graphic designers and illustrators of the day participating. The poster, considered an "element of identity and historical unity," has become a collector's item.
Italian Thrush Trophy
The fair is well known to industry experts throughout Europe: particularly renowned are the exhibition of songbirds and the singing competitions that take place over the course of several days, concluding on Sunday, September 6th, when at first light, the Thrush of Italy trophy will be awarded to the best Song Thrush. Furthermore, this year, the beautiful Friulian town will also host the 27th European Championship in Bird Song Imitation, both free-mouthed and using special whistles. On Saturday, September 5th, at approximately 6:00 PM, at the deconsecrated church of San Gregorio, teams and individual imitators from Italy, France, and Spain will participate. Divided into four song categories (blackbird, song thrush, redwing, and various), they will compete with harmonious warblings to win the competition.
Traditions to be preserved
Hunting fairs are vital for preserving local traditions and cultures, supporting the economies of small villages and rural communities, and maintaining community cohesion through these core and shared values. Prior to this highlight of the festival, the Church of San Gregorio will host the conference "Hunting with Live Decoys: A Tradition That Must Never Die," moderated by Lorenzo Dal Pont with speakers by Giovanni Persona, Dario Buscema, Francesco Lanaro, Massimo Zanardelli, and the Hon. Francesco Bruzzone. This will be followed by the presentation of the book "The Country Gentleman's Manual: Knowing How to Live Between Nature, Hunting, Tradition, and Style," moderated by Dario Buscema with the participation of Massimo Marracci, one of the book's three authors.
