Re-perimeterization
Federcaccia Sicily A note has been sent to the mayors affected by the proposed re-perimetering of the Alcantara River Park, promoted by ARTA Sicilia, urging them to firmly oppose the expansion proposal, since the needs of biodiversity conservation must always be considered alongside those of humanity, achieving balance and compatibility among all users of natural resources. Regarding the re-perimetering of the Alcantara River Park, we first point out that the constant expansion of protected areas in various forms has exceeded the percentage limits established by National Law 157/92 and Regional Law 33/97 in Sicily, which respectively set a quota of 20 to 30% for the former and 25% for the latter to be designated as agro-forestry-pastoral land for the protection of wildlife.
Agro-forestry-pastoral territory
It is absurd that once again the ARTA has decided "motu proprio" to expand the protected agricultural, forestry, and pastoral area without the initial involvement of other stakeholders, who are thus unable to provide comments, opinions, and assessments. Although the two aforementioned laws provide for the quotas described, Sicily currently has a protected area of 36,92%, which is therefore closed to various human activities, including hunting, in defiance of the provisions.
Very strong limitation
The re-perimetering of the Alcantara River Park would lead to an exponential increase in the area subject to various restrictions (building, agriculture, hunting, fishing, and general land use restrictions). Human activities would be severely limited, with all the consequences of abandonment and degradation visible in numerous protected areas in Sicily and Italy. It should be remembered that the guiding principle for the conservation of ecosystems and natural habitats is the sustainable use of resources, not the imposition of bans, which instead appears to be the guiding philosophy of ARTA (Federcaccia Sicilia Regional Council).
