The President of the Tuscany Region has signed the ordinance establishing "measures for the prevention, control, and eradication of African swine fever (ASF) ." The regional ordinance aims to incorporate and coordinate the measures set forth in Ordinance No. 3/2025 and Ordinance No. 4/2025 of the Special Commissioner for African Swine Fever into a single document, as well as highlighting additional measures applicable throughout the region. A specific annex clarifies the wildlife management activities permitted in the Massa-Carrara and Lucca areas, depending on the geographic location and the operators involved.
The actions envisaged by the Commissioner
The President of the Region stated that this is an urgent measure prompted by the expansion of the restricted zones in the northern Italian cluster, which also includes a portion of Tuscany, specifically the almost entire province of Massa-Carrara and the northwestern part of the province of Lucca. The ordinance seeks to implement all the actions envisioned by the Special Commissioner, adapting and funding them for the regional territory and seeking to involve and coordinate all stakeholders in the sector. Indeed, it is crucial to safeguard Tuscan livestock production, the supply chains, and the local communities connected to them, which provide high-quality products exported worldwide and provide significant employment in rural areas. The President then thanked all those involved, from institutions to volunteers, for both the activities already carried out and those to be carried out from now on, who, as always, will operate with dedication and a collaborative spirit.
Restriction areas
Both health and wildlife measures are coordinated and integrated for the restricted areas, given that the fight to eradicate ASF affects both domestic and wild pigs. The ordinance provides €690 for the restricted areas, which will be managed by the North West Tuscany Local Health Authority (USL) for disease control measures and the establishment of carcass storage facilities. Wildlife management also plays a health role in the restricted areas. The North West Tuscany Local Health Authority's veterinary service, with the support of the relevant regional offices, through the Territorial Operational Groups (GOT), will coordinate all the agencies and entities involved, from the provincial police to the territorial hunting areas (ATC), private wildlife institutes, the Carabinieri Forestry Corps, and both national and regional park authorities.
