The reasons for the rejection
The Council of State, which at the beginning of last month had suspended the decree for the culling of two wolves issued by the Province of Bolzano Following several predations committed this summer at a mountain hut in Alta Val Venosta, the precautionary appeal filed by ENPA, LAV, and LNDC Animal Protection was declared inadmissible as the deadline for implementing the decree had expired.
Animal rights disappointment
However, the same associations do not want to give up: "We trust that the Bolzano Regional Administrative Court will fully accept the detailed arguments we have advanced, confirming the illegality of the killing during the merits of the trial. Even when the weakening of these animals' protection status, which unfortunately has already occurred in European legislation, is implemented in Italy, no wolf will be allowed to be harmed if there is a bloodless alternative, namely the numerous other effective and satisfactory solutions provided for by the directive itself, to prevent predation.".
What will happen now
The well-known animal rights activist then added: “We are pleased to learn that the second wolf targeted by the Province of Bolzano is finally safe, but we also demand justice for the wolf that was brutally killed – we trust that the judiciary will declare the illegitimacy of a killing that could, and should, have been avoided, carried out exclusively to gain the electoral consensus of hunters and farmers.".
