“A satisfactory response to a problem that is growing year after year: we thank the Lombardy Region and the Agriculture Councillor Alessandro Beduschi for the allocated funding and for their commitment in wildlife containmentThis is the comment made by Alberto Cortesi, president of Confagricoltura Mantua, upon the announcement by the Lombardy Region that compensation claims for damage caused by wild fauna to agricultural production had been settled. In the province of Mantua, claims were accepted for 216 companies and paid for a total of €984,000. The compensation covers the period from January 1, 2025 to September 30, 2025.
Damages assessed
"The damage caused by wild fauna to agricultural businesses in our area is a problem we cannot afford to let down," Cortesi continues. "In fact, we're seeing a steady increase in damages and, consequently, compensation claims: in the same period in 2024, there were 133 claims for approximately €743 in assessed damages. This year has been particularly challenging in this regard, especially considering that the count doesn't include all losses caused by coypus, which cannot be estimated because this animal is not considered huntable and, therefore, not registered."
Wild boar containment and more
"As reported by our association," concludes the president of Confagricoltura Mantova, "among the species causing the most damage are hares, crows, and pigeons. The Lombardy Region's wild boar control program is bearing fruit, while we are seeing growing commitment from the Province of Mantua and numerous municipalities to contain coypu, while other municipalities in the Mantua area are still lagging behind and risk undermining part of the effort. Among the crops most affected by wild fauna this year, watermelon leads the way, accounting for almost 30% of the damage. This is followed by soybeans (19,7%), melons (17,4%), and, gradually, corn, rice, apples, pears, and tomatoes." (Source: Confagricoltura)
