The hunting institutes involved
There are very few hunting institutes (hunting areas, Alpine districts, wildlife-hunting companies and agritourism-hunting companies), given the recent provision adopted by the Regional Council, which will implement the provisions of the Ordinance of the Special Commissioner for African Swine Fever, bringing forward the scheduled wild boar hunt starting September 1, 2025. This is a small number, despite a measure designed to cull as many wild boars as possible, given the emergency situation currently raging in our region. This is what Coldiretti Piemonte states regarding the adjustment to the hunting calendar.
Wild boars in Piedmont
"Usually, the hunting calendar calls for the start of the hunt on September 21st or October 1st, so this early start is certainly useful in addressing a highly problematic situation, caused by the increasingly high number of wild boars in Piedmont," explain Cristina Brizzolari and Bruno Rivarossa, President and Confederation Delegate of Coldiretti Piemonte. "Implementing this ordinance would be instrumental both in preventing new cases of African swine fever and in limiting the damage that wild boars continue to cause to agricultural businesses, which, moreover, as previously reported, have not even received full compensation from the Region for the losses incurred last year."
Agricultural damage
"In 2024, the damage amounted to €4 million, an increase compared to 2023. This situation, therefore, creates critical health issues, continues to generate high risks for the entire regional agri-food supply chain linked to the pig sector, and increases the dangers to public safety due to accidents that wild boars can cause. It also causes significant damage to crops, with significant economic repercussions for agricultural businesses. Therefore, extraordinary measures are required that can no longer be postponed."
