Institutional path
The Steering Committee of the Italian hunting world (composed of Federcaccia, Enalcaccia, ANLC, ANUUMigratoristi, Arcicaccia and Italcaccia, and the CNCN – National Hunting and Nature Committee) has sent a letter to the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella , to submit for his attention some reflections on the debate that has developed around the proposed updating of Law No. 157 of 1992. This initiative is part of the institutional process initiated in recent weeks by hunting organizations, which had already seen the sending of a similar communication to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, with the aim of maintaining the institutions' attention on a discussion that, over time, has progressively taken on characteristics that transcend normal democratic debate.
Inaccurate reconstructions
In their letter to the President of the Republic, the associations highlight how the debate over hunting law reform has been accompanied by the spread of inaccurate narratives, highly emotional messages, and outright fake news, transforming the legislative debate into a broader campaign to delegitimize hunting and those who live, work, and protect rural areas on a daily basis. According to the signatories, opposition to the changes to the law stems from a broader attempt to assert an exclusively contemplative conception of the relationship between humanity and the environment, progressively denying the managerial, productive, and cultural functions of rural activities. This opposition risks fueling a growing gap between the urban and rural visions, marginalizing a significant segment of Italian society.
Climate of hostility
The letter also draws attention to the climate of hostility that has developed towards hunters, often portrayed as a minority lacking social legitimacy simply because of their numerical size. It emphasizes, however, that the hunting world is an integral part of the broader community of inland and rural areas, made up of farmers, ranchers, and all those involved in the practical management of the land.
The request
For these reasons, the Steering Committee requests the President of the Republic to authoritatively reaffirm the principles of mutual respect, pluralism, and the full dignity of every member of Italian society, as well as a renewed focus on the principle of adversarial debate in information, particularly in public broadcasting. With this further initiative, the undersigned associations confirm their desire to continue discussions exclusively at the institutional level, maintaining a high level of attention on issues concerning the future of hunting, wildlife management, and recognition of the role played by rural communities in protecting and conserving the environment.
