Western route
This year's spring meeting of the EU Task Force on Bird Recovery provided important updates on adaptive management of turtle dove collection. In terms of population trends, an increase was detected in the western route of the dove and a further decrease in the central-eastern route, despite a significant reduction in the harvest achieved by Member States (up to 65% reduction). Further work is needed to understand the factors driving these changes in population trends.
Reliability analysis
Progress has been made in the overall process by conducting, at the request of FACE, a reliability analysis of the population trends predicted by the model, which are used to provide information on the sustainability of different hunting scenarios. This was achieved by the scientific consortium by comparing the model-predicted trend with the observed population trend compiled by the Pan European Common Birds Monitoring Scheme (PECBMS).
The impact of hunting
This work showed quite good results produced by the model, but an apparent overestimation of the population decrease of the Turtle Dove was highlighted. This indicates that, regardless of the underlying causes, the impact of hunting on the population may be overestimated. The report provides more details on these updates, as well as insights into the latest advances in adaptive turtle dove harvest management (source: FACE).
