Changed regulatory frameworks
With yesterday's vote in the Chamber of Deputies, the start of the legislative process for the modification of the wolf protection statusThis approval, linked to the European Delegation Law, represents a fundamental and necessary step in the parliamentary process to equip the country with more realistic wildlife management tools, in compliance with the changing international regulatory frameworks.
The meaning of the vote in the House
The Chamber's vote formally confirms its acceptance of the principle that the wolf's current, strictly protected status must be reviewed, in line with recent European-level recommendations and discussions. Using the European Delegation Act as a vehicle, Parliament recognizes the need to rapidly align national legislation with developments in European and international law, opening the way to more flexible management. It recognizes the urgent need to address the economic impact of predation on livestock and the growing public safety concerns related to the species' spread with effective management tools.
The passage to the Senate
With the approval of the Chamber of Deputies, the provision, part of a broader legislative measure, now moves to the Senate for a second reading and final approval. Approval by the Senate will conclude the law's parliamentary process, allowing the Government to proceed with the legislative decrees necessary to implement the provisions and enabling the implementation of territorial management plans. Completion of this process will provide the updated regulatory framework required for balanced and scientifically sound management of the wolf, laying the foundation for coexistence that does not penalize vital livestock farming. An amendment proposed by the Honorable Lucrezia Mantovani of the Italian League (FdI) has effectively removed the 30-day deadline for the practical implementation of the wolf declassification. The deadline for the Ministry of the Environment remains set for 2027, but, if there is political will, this could happen even sooner rather than later (source: AB – Agrivenatoria Biodiversitalia).
