The Council of State again
Italian hunters' first thoughts these days are undoubtedly going to the Council of State. In addition to the ruling regarding the alleged conscientious objection that would prohibit hunting on private land, there is also the one regarding feeders for ungulatesThe constitutional body examined the appeal by LAV (Anti-Vivisection League) regarding the ungulate feeders authorized by the Province of Trento.
The affected areas
According to the sixth section, the province will have to evaluate the impact these troughs have on biodiversity, ecosystems, and human safety. This is why it has been ordered to consider possible suspension in at least some areas (primarily Val di Non and Val di Sole). Animal rights activists, just as they did with the case of lands prohibited for ethical reasons, have interpreted this ruling in their own way.
Animal rights activists rejoice
This is the version offered by LAV: “Feeding is a useful practice for hunters to increase the number of animals they kill, but it is scientifically proven to damage ecosystems and the well-being of the animals that feed at the feeders, and contribute to the creation of confident, and therefore potentially dangerous, bears. We are very pleased with this important victory, which comes after years of efforts by LAV to ensure the safety of citizens and bears, attempting to put an end to a practice that benefits only hunters but also impacts coexistence with bears. Now the Province of Trento must comply with the guidelines provided by the highest administrative court.".
