Who attended the meeting
This morning, a meeting was held at the Prefecture on the problem of the reported presence of wild boars in the municipal territory of Ascoli Piceno, a phenomenon that has increased significantly in recent weeks. The meeting, chaired by Deputy Prefect Gianluca Braga, was attended by Police Chief Aldo Fusco, Councilor Marco Cardinelli of the Municipality of Ascoli Piceno, the Commanders of the Provincial and Local Police, the President of the Territorial Hunting Area, the Directors of the relevant AST Services, as well as representatives of the Carabinieri Forestry Group and the relevant Sector of the Marche Region.
Mapping of sightings
First, the issue was examined through specific monitoring conducted by the Provincial Police and the related mapping of sightings recorded in the city during the current year, which highlighted the areas most affected by the ungulate incursions.
Attracting wildlife
Furthermore, possible indirect measures to combat the phenomenon were highlighted, which had already been suggested in a handbook produced by the Prefecture in 2024, with the contribution of the Carabinieri Forestali and the AST Prevention Department. These include a series of behaviors aimed at preventing situations that could attract wildlife to urban areas, including the following:
the ongoing maintenance of parks and green spaces in urban centers and suburbs, as scrub and uncultivated areas offer wild boars tranquility, food, and shelter;
the provision of adequate fencing of parks and green areas to limit access;
raising awareness of correct behavior among citizens, who will take care not to leave waste in the open air.
Alongside these measures, possible direct actions to control the wild boar population in urban areas were also discussed. In this regard, the Marche Region, which has jurisdiction over the matter, has indicated the intervention model to be implemented, building on what has already been achieved in other provinces. Specifically, the regional offices, at the request of the municipal administration, will promote the timely signing of a memorandum of understanding between all the involved entities, to begin capture operations for wild boars sighted in the city, in accordance with the procedures established by the current regulatory framework.
ATC availability
In this regard, the Ascoli Piceno Territorial Hunting Area (ATC) announced the availability of a new type of cage (so-called pig brig) recently acquired for use by the Provincial Police. Therefore, following the meeting, it was agreed that:
The Municipality of Ascoli Piceno will immediately submit a request to the Marche Region to sign a memorandum of understanding to regulate wild boar control in urban areas. The Region has committed to urgently convening a meeting to finalize the document, involving all interested parties;
The Municipality of Ascoli Piceno will also consider adopting a mayoral ordinance. In light of the critical situations identified regarding the presence of groups of wild boars in the city, appropriate provisions will be issued to citizens to prevent conditions that attract wild fauna.
Particular attention will be paid to the care and maintenance of green areas, starting with areas where sightings have already been recorded;
Finally, to ensure traffic safety in urban areas, road signs will be strengthened, where necessary, to prevent potential accidents due to collisions with animals (source: Ministry of the Interior).
