Highly pathogenic
The regional veterinary health authorities of Umbria and the ASL 1 announce that, in the context of the constant health surveillance activities in the territory, an outbreak of bird flu Highly pathogenic H5N1 influenza virus (H5N1) was detected on a pheasant farm. This case is part of a nationwide outbreak of similar cases in several regions. No critical issues have been reported for the general population: the risk to humans is very low and linked to direct and prolonged contact with infected animals. Confirmation of the outbreak follows laboratory tests conducted by the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Umbria and Marche.
Virus detected early
In addition to its laboratory activities, the Institute supports health authorities in epidemiological surveillance and the control of infectious diseases. The virus's early detection was made possible by the active local monitoring and surveillance system, which allows for early detection of potential cases and rapid intervention to limit their spread. All measures required by national and European health regulations for the management of avian influenza were immediately implemented. These include strengthening biosecurity measures on the affected farm, the controlled management of potentially at-risk animals and materials, the sanitization of facilities, and the establishment of specific monitoring activities in the surrounding area.
A heritage to be protected
The Veterinary Services are also conducting epidemiological investigations to reconstruct the origin of the virus and verify any possible links to wild fauna or other livestock, in order to ensure maximum protection of the poultry population and the local area. Health authorities urge breeders and poultry keepers to remain vigilant and strictly comply with the required biosecurity measures, promptly reporting any abnormalities in their animals to the veterinary services. The health surveillance system will continue to closely monitor the situation and updates will be provided as necessary. (Source: Umbria Region)
