Devastating impact
It's been almost four years since a young man from Codognè (Treviso) lost his life in a car accident on the Strada Agordina. The 22-year-old was driving his car, which overturned after hitting a fence. The car veered off the road to avoid a hoofed animal, most likely a roe deer or a deer, but now there are some important developments in this case.
What the Court ruled
The Veneto Region was found jointly responsible for the accident and death. In practice, the local authority failed to act preventively: everything stems from a ruling by the Belluno Court, according to which the Region itself " contributes to compensation for physical and material damage suffered in a road accident caused by a collision with wild fauna, if it is demonstrated that the measures normally appropriate to prevent, avoid, or limit such damage were not adopted ."
Further measures
The measures include the installation of warning signs at specific distances, protective nets and barriers, as well as optical devices to dazzle wildlife. Therefore, warning signs alone are not enough, and many now hope that the measure will inspire other similar situations.
