The “Campelle-Calamento” pack
The mayors of the area have asked to begin immediately with training and information initiatives aimed first at breeders and then at the entire community, in addition to a control plan. In 2025, the Lower Valsugana The area has been affected by a significant series of predations attributed to the "Campelle-Calamento" pack, which is permanently present in the area. In 2025 alone, 53 damage events were recorded in the Lower Valsugana—37% of the provincial total—for a total compensation of €28. The predations occurred largely at night or at twilight, often within a few meters of homes (between 3 and 110 meters).
Prevention works
In this regard, it should be noted that out of a total of 53 predations reported since the beginning of the year in the Lower Valsugana, only 17 cases (32%) had preventative measures in place. Since 2018, over 70 preventative measures have been deployed in the Lower Valsugana, including electric fences. These tools, when properly installed and maintained, represent the most effective method for protecting livestock.
The need for proper communication
Local officials were also informed that, given the extent of the damage caused by the "Campelle-Calamento" pack, the Province had requested the culling of two wolves in Valsugana. However, this measure was not approved by ISPRA (the Italian National Institute for Environmental Protection and Research). The assessments highlighted that the protective measures adopted to date have not been sufficiently widespread. Despite receiving a negative opinion regarding the culling, the Wildlife Service responded with several technical clarifications to underscore the procedural correctness of the request. During the discussions, the importance of proper communication on the issue and the adoption of appropriate behavior by the public was emphasized. Finally, mayors were encouraged, and this should be extended to citizens, to report the presence of wolves in populated areas by contacting the local Forestry Station (source: Province of Bolzano).
