Indictment
The Honourable Michela Vittoria Brambilla gave an interview to Corriere della Sera following the indictment of the President of the Province of Trento, Maurizio Fugatti, for the demolition of thebear M90This is his point of view regarding the carnivore: “Provincial laws and a handwritten decree are not enough to legalize the killing of a protected species. No paper shield can hold up when death was inflicted through cruelty, as demonstrated by the expert report, because M90 was not drugged and died slowly, struck by two bullets that caused internal bleeding and a prolonged agony. It is right that Fugatti and the other suspects, each for their own part, answer for the crime under Article 544-bis of the Criminal Code, cruelty to animal killing, for which the Brambilla Law, recognizing all animals as sentient beings with rights, provides for up to four years in prison with a maximum fine of €60,000, always jointly. For too long, the Province believed it could dispose of the entire national community's heritage as it pleased, even for electoral purposes.".
The accusations against Fugatti
The discussion then moved on to the management of wolves: “The solution isn't a hair-trigger shot, which is impractical, useless, and immoral. And I'm not just talking about the culls ordered by Fugatti, but the blatantly illegal ones, encouraged by the administration's policies that have transformed Trentino into a poacher's paradise. As long as this approach remains in place, any productive dialogue and any real solution will be impossible, requiring the effective implementation of all preventative measures (from bear-proof bins to awareness and information campaigns, guard dogs, electric fences against wolves, and so on) and serious discussions with experts to encourage the dispersal of animals across the Alpine region or their containment with humane methods.".
The responsibilities of the people of Trentino
The answer to the question about the fact that animal rights activists cannot understand those who live in the mountains was very particular: "I live on the slopes of Mount Resegone, which has a prominence of only 727 meters. I realize that's not enough to make me a mountaineer. However, those who approved and implemented the Life Ursus project in Trentino knew the area well—the mountains, the valleys, the alpine pastures, and the mountain huts—and the voters who supported this choice knew it even better, the true mountaineers who perhaps thought it would attract more tourists. Well, bears aren't toys that can be sent back if you no longer like them. They need to be managed. The same goes for wolves, with the difference that no one has reintroduced them. Their expansion is natural. Now the people of Trentino have a double responsibility: towards themselves and towards the national community to which these large carnivores belong.".
