The resolution of the councilor Saccardi
With a call for tenders to be released soon, the The Tuscan Regional Authority will allocate 5 million euros to farmers who graze in the regional territory (with the exception of the islands of the Archipelago) to support them in the activation of preventive measures against attacks by large carnivores (e.g. wolves) and thus limit both the number of attacks and damage to livestock. The measure was approved in the last session of the Regional Council, with a resolution proposed by the vice-president and regional councilor for agriculture Stefania Saccardi. "Our will - explained the president of the Tuscany Region Eugenio Giani - is to support farmers in the implementation of measures to protect livestock, exposed to greater risks due to the return of large predators such as the wolf".
European funds
"We thought - added Councilor Saccardi - in these difficult times for sheep, goat and cattle breeding, to activate a measure of the new programming of European funds, which allows to provide support for the expenses that they have to sustain every day to defend their flocks from attacks by predators; now they will be able to benefit from compensation for expenses such as guard dogs or night shelters". The new 5 million euro call for tenders is part of the implementation of the Strategic Plan CAP - Rural Development Complement 2023-2027 of the Tuscany Region, will be issued by November and provides for an annual payment per hectare of grazed surface. The beneficiaries of the intervention will be individual or associated breeders of sheep, goats and cattle, who graze in the regional territory, with the exception of the territories of the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, and who are in possession of an active breeding code in BDN or of their own company file of grazing areas (the admissibility of which is foreseen in the ARTEA Information System).
How to access the call
In addition, to be eligible for funding, pastures must have a surface area of at least 5 hectares for sheep and goats and 10 hectares for cattle. If a breeder has pastures for both sheep/goats and cattle, the surfaces must be separate. In addition, to access the call for proposals, sheep/goat breeders must demonstrate that they own one or more dogs of specific breeds for guarding (ownership and breed must be registered in the canine registry) and that they use structures with fixed perimeter fences or a stable for night-time shelter for livestock. The contribution paid will be determined based on the number of hectares of surface area subject to commitment and based on the species raised. 101 euros per hectare of pasture are envisaged for those who raise sheep and goats and 66 euros per hectare of pasture for those who raise cattle. In the event that the funding requests exceed the available financial allocation, priority will be given to pastures up to 50 hectares, which will receive 100% of the support, while from 50 to 150 hectares 60% of the support will be assigned and over 150 hectares 50%. The call and, subsequently, the accepted applications, the ranking, the calculation methods, the rejected applications and the reasons for any rejection will be published on the Artea website (source: Toscana Notizie).
