The Regional Council of Tuscany adopted with resolution 666 of 25 May 2026 the new Wildlife Hunting Plan, the planning tool that defines the guidelines for the management and protection of wildlife and for the planning of hunting activities in the region. This morning, its contents were presented at Palazzo Strozzi Sacrati by President Eugenio Giani, together with Undersecretary to the Presidency Bernard Dika. According to President Eugenio Giani, "The new Wildlife and Hunting Plan represents a concrete example of a balance between environmental protection, responsible wildlife management, and hunting regulation. The Tuscany Region has developed a tool that integrates scientific knowledge, local needs, and contributions following a broad participatory process. The division into homogeneous areas, the precise identification of wildlife institutes, and the definition of suitable and non-suitable areas ensure careful and proportionate management, capable of combining biodiversity conservation and the sustainability of human activities."
Sustainable regulation
"The Plan is the result of rigorous and collaborative work aimed at harmonizing ecosystem protection and sustainable hunting regulation," said Undersecretary Bernard Dika. "Environment and human activity are the aspects that make our landscape unique in the world, and they have always coexisted in balance in our territory. As the Tuscany Region, we want to affirm a responsible yet modern vision, through precise planning that begins with territorial specificities."
Second phase of the journey
The recent approval by the Regional Council marks the beginning of the second phase of the process, following its initial adoption in 2025 by the Regional Council and Council. This was followed by the participatory phase, a program of local meetings to illustrate the Plan's contents to all citizens, associations, and interested entities, who were able to provide their comments on the adopted text. Wildlife and hunting planning is implemented by the Tuscany Region, taking into account the environmental and socioeconomic characteristics of the territory, with the aim of ensuring the protection and conservation of wildlife, the maintenance of ecological balances, and sustainable regulation of hunting. The Plan organizes the territory into homogeneous districts and defines the location and extent of wildlife institutes, fixed hides, suitable and non-suitable areas for ungulates, as well as all the necessary divisions for managing hunting activities.
A further fundamental role
Within the districts, protection zones and sanctuaries along migratory routes, restocking and capture areas, hunting buffer zones, public and private wildlife breeding centers, wildlife and hunting farms and agritourism hunting lodges, dog training areas, national parks, and protected areas are identified, among other things. The role of local volunteers is enhanced, and investments in IT services and training, particularly for safety, are increased. A key role was also played by the NURV (Unified Regional Unit for the Evaluation and Verification of Public Investments), which provided a mandatory opinion on the plan, thereby certifying its compliance with environmental regulations and adherence to regional policies regarding technical and management decisions (source: Tuscany Region).
