A fiery week
The Tuscany Region has established a ban on burning of plant residues starting from 3 October up to and including 22 October. The decision was made in light of the persistence of weather conditions favorable to the spread of fire and the numerous forest fires that have affected the regional territory in the last week (25 events with 7 hectares of forest and another 12 hectares of vegetation covered in flames) , many of which originate from plant residue burning operations not managed in compliance with the regulations.
Unusual climate
The persistence of absolutely unusual climatic conditions for the period has in fact meant that the danger indices for the ignition of forest fires are dangerously rising. The Region, in collaboration with the LAMMA Consortium and CNR Ibimet, has set up a forest fire risk prediction system that uses the Canadian FWI (Fire Weather Index) to determine the level of risk of fire development and spread in the regional territory .
Risk map
The risk map, updated daily, has been used for some years by the regional organization AIB as a decision-making tool for more effective operational management of interventions and services for the prevention and active fight against forest fires. The daily bulletin is shared with the entire population, in line with what is required of all Italian regions by the National Civil Protection Department, and is visible at the link: https://geoportale.lamma.rete.toscana.it/bollettino_incendi/index .html (Source TUSCANY NEWS)
