The virus
The Tuscany Region has sent all mayors a note on the biosecurity and control measures established by the Special Commissioner for African Swine Fever (Ordinance No. 4/2026). Currently, the restricted areas include parts of the provinces of Lucca, Massa-Carrara, Pistoia, and Prato. African swine fever affects only pigs and wild boars and is not transmitted to humans. However, humans can unintentionally transport the virus through mud and debris on footwear, tires, equipment, and vehicles.
The areas
The areas are classified into:
– zone I, high risk but with no confirmed cases;
– zone II, with presence of the disease in wild boars;
– zone III, with presence of the disease in domestic pigs, with or without cases in wild boars.
In Zones II and III, outdoor activities in agricultural and natural areas—including hiking, cycling, fishing, agricultural and forestry work, mushroom and truffle hunting, events, camping, use of picnic areas, transhumance, and mountain grazing—must be conducted in compliance with specific biosecurity measures. Certain requirements for agricultural and forestry activities also apply in Zone I.
What is fundamental
This is not a general ban, but it is essential:
stay on marked paths and trails
keep dogs on a leash
do not abandon waste or food scraps and do not feed wild boars
park in the designated areas, avoiding lawns and areas with vegetation
clean and disinfect footwear, wheels, equipment and vehicles after activities
use suitable disinfectant products, scrupulously following the instructions on the packaging
For activities involving more than 20 people, prior approval from the competent health authority is required. The promoter must also promptly inform the relevant municipality.
Signage
Municipalities are required to post appropriate signs in restricted areas, disseminate information to citizens, and ensure, where applicable, organized access, parking areas, and necessary checks. If you find a dead, injured, or obviously distressed wild boar, do not approach or touch it. Record its location and call the regional hotline 0573 306655, available daily, including holidays, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The list of affected municipalities and all updates are available in the Tuscany Region section dedicated to African Swine Fever.
