Green revolution and ecological transition
In recent days, the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE) has delivered to the Tuscan Archipelago National Park Two next-generation drones are being deployed as part of the DigitAP protected area digitalization project, funded by the PNRR (National Plan for Regional Development) – Mission 2 "Green Revolution and Ecological Transition." Along with the delivery of the equipment, training is currently underway for the Park's Conservation Office and Technical Office staff, aimed at ensuring effective and integrated use of the new tools in institutional monitoring activities.
Monitoring activities
The Park has never before had technological equipment of this kind, which will significantly enhance species and habitat monitoring activities, as well as the analysis of the effects of climate change on natural heritage. This innovation represents a major step forward in protecting the biodiversity of the protected area, especially given the morphological characteristics of the Tuscan Archipelago islands, where numerous inaccessible and difficult-to-access areas are located. The drones will be used for:
• photogrammetry and mapping of wooded areas, wetlands, coastal zones and other natural habitats;
• detection of plant and animal species, invasive species and environmental indicators through multispectral and thermal sensors;
• temporal monitoring of seasonal variations in vegetation or those following extreme events, such as fires and floods.
Real-time data
Thanks to advanced data transmission systems, the collected information—images, telemetry, and positioning data—can be transmitted in real time to control centers or dedicated servers, enabling timely decisions and dynamic updates of maps and models, even during long-term missions or in remote areas. National Parks and Marine Protected Areas have played a key role in biodiversity monitoring for years, providing the scientific community with a broad and qualified knowledge base. However, the heterogeneous nature of monitoring activities has often made data integration complex in the medium to long term. To address this need, Measure M2C4 – Investment 3.2 "Digitalization of National Parks and Marine Protected Areas (DigitAP)," led by MASE, aims to introduce standardized and digitized procedures to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of protected area management. ISPRA is responsible for the technical and scientific coordination of the DigitAP project.
