The Regional Department of Rural and Territorial Development, of the Regional Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Mediterranean Fisheries, has organised two training days for the month of October for hunters interested in participating in the activities of Woodcock monitoring (Scolopax rusticola) in Sicily. It should be noted that this monitoring activity is based on the voluntary participation of hunters specialized in the species, according to a monitoring model proposed by FIBEC – Italian Woodcock Hunters' Federation, shared by ISPRA, adopted by the regional administration, and already implemented in Sicily since 2018.
Monitoring will be based on a demographic survey of the harvest (age classes, weight, and decades of harvest) and an abundance survey (calculation of the Hunting Index of Abundance – ICA), both during the hunting season and during the hunting quiet period, in areas suitable for the species' wintering, identified by the Regional Administration. For monitoring during the hunting quiet period, qualified hunters, who have completed specific courses and exams, following the educational model developed with ISPRA, will be employed, along with their specialized pointing dogs. Monitoring will be carried out in all regional Territorial Hunting Areas.
Here are the two days in detail:
- on October 24, 2025, from 9:00 am, for hunters residing in the provinces of Agrigento, Palermo, and Trapani, in the Ficuzza area – Corleone district (PA), at the Real Casina di Caccia
