The economic commitment
“The efforts of the Veneto Region in recent years have intensified in step with the worsening of the phenomenon: in the last two years, 438 thousand euros have been allocated for the control of nutria and the 2025-2027 budget has already foreseen a commitment of 1,5 million euros in the three-year period. Given this, the streamlining of all procedures related to the actions of containment of nutria has always been one of the issues that is closest to our hearts so that operators are allowed to intervene in a simple and effective way", declares the regional councilor for Hunting, Territory and Parks, Cristiano Corazzari.
Head Management
“I think it is useful to remember that what some call bureaucratic complications regarding the management of the killed nutria heads are nothing more than prescriptions set by ISPRA, the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research, an emanation of the Ministry of the Environment, relevant in the reporting of activities at a regional level, and aimed at updating the presence of the species in the territory as well as evaluating the results of the control activities carried out”, continues Corazzari. “That said, with the new nutria plan that will be implemented by the end of this year we will make further requests for simplifications hoping to find acceptance by the ministry”.
Licenses issued
“I also believe it is useful to remember some numbers on culling: in 2023 in the provinces of Rovigo and Verona alone, 23.039 and 35.600 heads were culled respectively for a total of approximately 58.600 heads, to be compared with the regional figure of 66.700 heads culled. The overall authorisations issued, at the end of 2023, to operators for the implementation of the control plan for the province of Rovigo are 1104 and for that of Verona 2.300”, adds the councillor. “Finally, I would like to remind you – concludes Councillor Corazzari – that there is already a national plan for the coypu which, after having analysed impacts, risks and international and national regulatory aspects, identifies the intervention techniques, with related methods, personnel employed, areas involved and methods of disposal of carcasses, on the basis of which the regional management plans are built” (source: Veneto Region).
