The measures implemented so far
Update on the situation, last Friday, in the prefecture of Benevento on the problems related to the increase in wild boars present in the provincial territory, which mainly impact on roads, crops and urban contexts. Prefect Raffaela Moscarella brought together representatives of institutions and bodies involved - including the region, the Carabinieri-Forestry Group, the regional parks of Taburno - Camposauro and Partenio, the municipalities involved, the local health authority and Anas - to examine the phenomenon and the measures developed so far for its containment.
Data provided by the Campania region
According to data provided by the Campania region, there are approximately 22 thousand specimens in the provincial territory. Their increase in the last decade has caused an increase in road accidents and, on the agricultural front, compensation requested by companies for damage to plantations.
What was the focus?
To contain the number of wild boars in circulation and reduce their presence in urban areas, the region has focused on:
- increase in the number of select controllers (today almost 600), that is, the figures who assist hunting agents in controlling animal species
- increase in cages and manholes for capture
- provision of financial compensation for the “removal” of each animal
- Approval of calls for financial contributions aimed at installing fences in rural areas
- increase in horizontal road markings on the roads most affected by crossings
- new methods for the recognition and evaluation of compensation to agricultural companies
- possibility for citizens and mayors to report the presence of wild boars in urban areas via email to the regional office of UOD Giovani Agricoltori.
Mapping of areas
On the road safety front, Prefect Moscarella stressed the importance of adopting measures that reduce the risk of wild boars crossing, especially on fast-flowing roads. In this regard, the region already has a mapping of the areas with the highest number of accidents that, also submitted to the Carabinieri Forestali, will be transmitted to Anas to allow the installation of fences on the sections of competence.
