Coldiretti Calabria intervenes firmly on the uncontrolled proliferation of wild boars in the areas of Sila Potato PGI, calling for an immediate change of direction from the institutions. This was written by Regional President Franco Aceto in a letter sent to Agriculture Councilor Gianluca Gallo and to the Special Commissioner of the Sila National Park Authority, Liborio Bloise.
Production at risk and businesses under attack
With the planting season now concluded and investments already made, farms are reporting ongoing damage and potentially irreversible losses. In the Sila area, the report states, wild boar presence is increasingly widespread, fields are particularly vulnerable in the early stages, and there is no possibility of recovering production, given the short crop cycle. The real risk is compromising one of the symbolic supply chains of Calabrian agriculture, with serious economic, employment, and social repercussions.
A Plan exists, but it is not implemented
Coldiretti emphasizes that the Extraordinary Wild Boar Containment Plan (approved at the end of 2024) contains effective tools, but they have remained largely unimplemented. Specifically, the direct involvement of farmers required by the Plan has not been implemented, operational procedures for timely action in the local areas are lacking, and there is a clear and significant delay in the concrete implementation of the measures.
Immediate and coordinated actions are needed
To address the emergency, Coldiretti Calabria is calling for the full and immediate implementation of the Special Plan, strengthening of selective inspectors and operational teams, concrete implementation of the role of farmer-hunters, widespread use of trapping cages, with adequate financial support, stable coordination between the Region, Sila Park, and the ATC, continuous monitoring of the most affected areas, and the urgent convening of a permanent operational table. Coldiretti is clear: this is no longer an occasional criticality, but an emergency that threatens the very survival of farms in inland areas.
Taking responsability
The organization therefore calls on all institutions to assume shared responsibility, emphasizing that protecting wildlife must prioritize the defense of agricultural work and territorial protection. Coldiretti Calabria reiterates its commitment to supporting affected agricultural businesses, promoting structural, rather than emergency, interventions, and defending a key supply chain like the Patata della Sila PGI, a symbol of Calabria's mountainous areas. "We must act now," the letter concludes. "Delays or partial interventions are no longer tolerable: the measures exist and must be fully implemented with immediate, coordinated, and ongoing interventions. Every day lost means destroyed production, compromised incomes, and more fragile territories. At stake is not only a production campaign, but the very survival of a strategic supply chain for Calabria.
