A serious episode
Below we report the open letter from the Roman Villa delle Grotte Foundation to the Extraordinary Commissioner of the Park, to the Superintendency, to the President of the Tuscany Region, to the Mayor of Portoferraio following what happened in the archaeological area of the Roman Villa delle Grotte, to theElba island"A new and serious episode is added to the many already reported on a problem that affects the whole island of Elba and on which the Elban municipalities and the Park agree: a group of wild boars has almost completely invaded the archaeological site of the Roman Villa of the Grotte".
The damage in detail
"The animals plowed the land, causing significant unevenness, damaging fences, landslides near archaeological structures, and the displacement or destruction of support poles, information panels, and even a stone bench. Faced with this damage, the Villa Romana delle Grotte Foundation is asking for concrete support from the Park, with which it has collaborated for years; from the Superintendency, for any on-site inspections; and from the Municipality of Portoferraio, a Foundation member for ten years, along with its subsidiary Cosimo de' Medici Srl.".
Unheard appeals
"But above all, the Foundation is addressing the Tuscany Region, which is called upon to intervene decisively. During his recent election campaign, the President of the Region pledged to appoint a Special Commissioner for the ungulate emergency on Elba: a commitment that now appears more urgent than ever. It is important to remember that the Villa Romana delle Grotte Foundation was among the first members of the "Wild Boar Eradication Committee on Elba," which promoted a study on the problem and a petition signed by dozens of businesses, trade associations, and a large segment of Elba's society. Despite this broad and representative mobilization, the appeals continue to fall on deaf ears, even from the Region itself, while the damage to cultural heritage and the surrounding area continues to increase.".
